If you feel like countless other homeowners who look at their bathroom as little more than a dazzling blaze of fixtures together with tiles, try reconsidering how your bathroom can be. It is not that tough, since all you need is your imagination to figure out exactly the look and feel that you would prefer. Here are a few design tips on small bathroom accessories that will give your bathroom that all important warm feeling in no time at all.

You need to decide on a theme for your bathroom as you would any other room in the house. Theming not only supplies mood to the room but also your individual personality. Of course, there are literally hundreds of themes to select from including sea life, country style, tropical beaches and Mediterranean villas. Nevertheless, as a good rule of thumb, you should choose a theme that suits you and not one that someone recommends. Ideally, go for a style that closely matches other designs around you house. By doing so, it will not be out of tune with the general theme of your house

Bathrooms in many older homes were installed as an afterthought and are literally remodelled closets in some cases. If you are unlucky enough to have a modest bathroom, you can still decorate to give the illusion of space by utilizing the right colours. Just bear in mind that with a small bathroom, less is often more. Both paint and wallpaper work well although, in a small space, apply neutral colours either on one wall or as an accent on a chair rail. If you decide on conventional white paint or wallpaper, it is a simple matter of accenting with colour using any of the myriad of decor accessories. Items like baskets, framed photographic prints, sea shells, throw rugs and even window dressings will all contribute colourful emphases without going overboard.

Warm rusty shade of paint or paper work very well with plants in the bathroom. However, select plants that like steamy warm conditions, and that can tolerate the various chemicals. Some plants just cannot take the mousse, hairspray, and perfumes that are used regularly in a bathroom. It will gum up the plants leaves and they will finish up in your trash can. If your bathroom is big enough, you can hang up plants from the ceiling, or put them on the rear of the lavatory. Large garden style tubs have ample space on the rim of the tub to place small plants, and together with bath soaps and baskets, they look stunning.

Another important aspect when dressing your bathroom are the towels and rugs. Deep plushy or hand woven rugs bring a touch of elegance. Even So, be careful when placing rugs on slippery bathroom vinyl flooring since a nasty fall can be a consequence. Look for rugs that have a lined backing of rubber to prevent falls. You can coordinate the rugs with the bathroom mat in alternating or matching colours too. Employing various textures that match your theme will give the bathroom a little extra feeling of warmth. Never think you are limited on textures since when they are combined with a neutral background, they make a bathroom homely and inviting to be in.

You can pep up your bathroom with decorative towel racks and colourful towels too. Towel racks are available in all manner of finishes including wood, bronze, silver and gold. If you want to match existing baskets and picture frames, you can paint or stain wooden racks in whatever colour or shade you desire.

Good, practical modern bathroom lighting is important too. The first consideration is for safety of course, but when the room is not being used, night lights can be left on and your cabinet tops could be used for a smallish lamp. Lamps can match your theme and so can your nightlights. You can dress them, or purchase them already fixed up with your theme. Of course, this all depends if you have enough counter space, but it is a great decorating idea for a theme.

Lastly, take time and study a few decorating books on bathrooms. Look at their designs and see the many unusual ways to theme your bathroom. Utilize their designs for inspiration so your own creative juices will get flowing. It is okay to be uniquely you when decorating your bathroom, so go for it! You will never know what unusual themes take your fancy until you check them out when trying to decorate your bathroom at home.
